Here in Canada, we recently celebrated Thanksgiving. This has inspired me to do a two-card reading on gratitude with the Rider-Waite-Smith deck.

1) What is gratitude?

ACE OF CUPS. Gratitude is the desire to offer a portion of what we receive back to the deep Source of All. It is a way of emptying ourselves in order to receive our next level of blessing. This doesn't necessarily mean that we say "thank you" with the unspoken agenda of getting something back; but gratitude creates the space for that to happen anyway. The dove carrying the Host into the Chalice is sacramental - it reminds us that to offer thanks is a holy act.

2) Why should we be thankful?

THE SUN. The Sun makes me think of the actual sun which shines every day, and which many of us take for granted. What if, somehow, it got snuffed out? Life as we know it could not exist. If gratitude is like the sun, then the reason we give thanks is because it's essential to our well-being as individuals and as a species. To be thankful renews us, revivifies us, and just makes us feel good. It demonstrates that we enjoy life and it makes giver(s) enthusiastic about giving more.
